Save Money on Utilities, Protect the Environment and Get Energy Star Tax Credits

ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency.

What is the ENERGY STAR Tax Credit?

The federal government has created the Energy Star Tax Credits in order to benefit those who purchase and install specific types of energy efficient product in their homes. The credit applies to purchases and improvements made between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2016.

ENERGY STAR distinguishes energy efficient products which may cost more to purchase than standard models, but will pay you back in lower energy bills within a reasonable amount of time, even without a tax credit.  Not all ENERGY STAR certified products qualify for a tax credit.

What is a tax credit?

Unlike a deduction, which reduces that amount of taxable income, a tax credit directly reduces the tax itself. A tax credit can amount to considerable savings on your tax return.

How do I know which Energy Star products are eligible?

This credit applies to certain ENERGY STAR products, including doors, windows, skylights, insulation, furnaces, boilers and water heaters. For complete information about the program from Colorado Springs Utilities, click the link below.

Showerhead Rebate

Showerheads are not something that you immediately think of when looking for ways to save energy, but because people shower in warm or hot water, using a high-performance shower head will reduce water use and therefore the amount of energy used to heat it.One WaterSense® showerhead can save a considerable amount of energy:

  • A standard 2.5 gallon per minute, or gpm, showerhead used for two ten-minute showers daily will use 17,750 gallons of heated water per year. Heating that water costs $130.
  • A similarly used WaterSense high-performance showerhead using between 1.5 and 2 gpm will save 3,550 to 7,100 gallons of heated water. This will save $30 to $50 per year in gas water heating costs.

Together with the savings in water and wastewater, each showerhead can save $50 to $100 per year.

The more and longer showers your customers currently take, the bigger the savings are realized.

To encourage customers to save both water and energy, we are offering a rebate to commercial customers who install or retrofit WaterSense certified showerheads (10 or more) at their facilities. We will provide a $10 or 50-percent rebate (whichever is less) on each WaterSense certified showerhead purchased and installed.
